Making Friends with Flickr

A presentation for the Upper Midwest CONTENTdm User Group in 2010

see http://prezi.com/k2un9gg51q0n/

given up for dead, no response, but we prepared

6/08, first email to flickr
10/08, intros from Marian of Susan Hoffman and I
  10/08, first response from flickr
2/09, begin to work on transfer scripts
2/09, new contact with flickr (wait for fall)
spring 2009, coding and work with JHSUM
  10/09, tickle flickr
  10/09, taking jhsum images public
2/10, news from Flickr that Commons were closed while they caught up
2/10, emailed new contact at flickr
  3/10, sign agreements
4/10, jhsum rollout in the flickr commons

almost two years, was it worth it?

--//--

three things to compare as best we can:

jhsum in reflections
jhsum in its own flickr account (six months)
jhsum in the commons (two months so far)

reflections vs. the commons

reflections: 15,689 views of jhsum
  flickr: 12,295 views of flickr

really? is reflections really more popular than flickr?

deeper analysis of june stats: 1,582 = 41 real views (at best) eliminate spiders like "Yahoo..Slurp" "ScoutJet" "msnbot" "DotBot" "Baiduspider" "Speedy+Spider" and (oops) "mdl-crawler"

revised reflections vs. the commons

reflections: 416 views of jhsum
  flickr: 12,295 views of flickr

flickr commons had about 30x the traffic found on reflections for this collection

what about flickr vs. flickr commons

flickr: 50 set views / month (296 over six months)
commons: 300 set views / month (614 over two months)

flickr commons had about 6x the traffic found on plain flickr flickr had about 5x the traffic found on reflections

going into the mainstream has a big impact on the number of people who see you getting highlighted in the mainstream has an enormous impact

what is the social impact?

--//--

flickr commons attracted 45 comments in two months reflections attracted 3 comments in two months

but!

we already know reflections had many fewer views than flickr

flickr commons attracted 1 comment for every 274 views reflections got 1 comment for every 139 views

an indication of the engagement of reflections users

and quality?

reflections:

Thank you so much for the photo. This is my great uncle Louis Spiegel.
  Photo is before 1919. c. 1903 - 1914
I believe this is a World War I uniform, given that it was taken in 1917.

flickr:

Wow, I really like the prices for those sacks. Trying finding them for that kind of money at an antique shop or on EBay today.
I hope they had a long and happy life together.
  l

but also:

All three Lebedoff triplets started at the University of Minnesota in 1956. David went to law school at Harvard; Jonathan also went to law school, at Minnesota. Judy was an English major at university, then worked as a radio producer. David is author of the recent book The Same Man: George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh in Love and War (Random House 2008). Jonathan was Chief US Magistrate Judge for the Federal District of Minnesota before he retired in 2005.

we are attracting a pretty engaged and serious audience with reflections but the mainstream can also tease out some gems

--//--

flickr is a community and to stay healthy the jhsum will have to put some effort into responding...

flickr also attracted over 60 requests to include images in other sets around flickr.

no abuses yet, but keeping an eye on comments

adding images as they get added to reflections

30x is a healthy increase in viewership, we'd love to help other collections get on board with flickr, but also note that there are 50 states and many more countries in the world with access to flickr... given that reach, an increase of only 30x means that a significant number of interested parties were already finding this material in reflections.
